On Love and Truth in Psychotherapy

Truth and love are phenomena, which are essential in the psychotherapeutic process. The healing of the person and development towards truth and healthy love imply a move from the literal to the symbolic level, which correlate with the move from one developmental stage (of narcissism) to healthy separation and relation to the other. Some examples of malfunctioning amplify the therapeutic implications and a better understanding of what Carl Jung called the transcendent function. The latter allows this movement towards the symbolic understanding to develop at an experiential level and towards a dialogue between the conscious and unconscious aspects of the individual.
